Frequently Asked Questions
How does the design process work?
After reaching out to us and establishing a communication either through email or phone calls, we will arrange a complimentary initial consultation. Our team is flexible regarding consultations which can take place either in person, at the site of the proposed project (dependent on location), or via remote video call. The more information you are able to provide us with will greatly benefit the planning and design phases and allow for a much smoother experience.
A site visit may be required to determine existing conditions and collect valuable information such as measurements and topography which can be essential when executing a plan. Conceptual designs will then be created and presented followed by any necessary revisions and then approved by you as the client. Upon satisfaction of conceptual designs, construction and permit drawings are then created along with any material selection if desired. You will receive copies of the final product electronically and paper copies can be provided upon request. Please note that paper copies may be subject to additional fees.
What is the expected timeline for a typical project?
There are many factors that contribute to the timeline of a project and are dependent on a number of items. Depending on the size and scope of your project, renovations, additions and custom designs can take anywhere from 4 to 6 months. These estimated timelines are subject to the number of design revisions, location of project, and speed of communication from the client.

Why should I hire you instead of an Architect?
Architectural Designers are held to the same legal standards respecting building code, design, energy efficiency, and municipal zoning. We establish strong relationships with clients, builders and other professionals and maintain a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. Architectural Designers have extensive technical and hands on experience that provide valuable knowledge in various areas of the planning, design and construction phases.
At Maritime Home Design Studio, we pride ourselves in our ability to execute projects of all sizes and scope, thanks to our in house experience working in public, private and non-for profit sectors. From Building Inspecting, Plans Examination, Permit Issuance, Custom Residential Design, Cabinetry/Kitchen/Bath Design, Energy Efficiency and Deep Energy Retrofits, you can be assured that our diversity and skill set will be sure to benefit any project.
Why should I spend money hiring someone to design my building?
The answer to whether you need to hire a professional to design a garage or building depends on the complexity and scale of your project. Many individuals have difficulty visualizing the structure they want and navigating the complexity of building codes. By working closely together, this allows us to create a cohesive design while ensuring compliance with local building code requirements, zoning by-laws and simultaneously working within your budget.
